Azithromycin, the generic name for Zithromax, belongs to a group of antibiotics called macrolides.

It works by preventing protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria which inhibits their growth and therefore enables the body’s own immune system to eradicate the infection.

After taking a  short course of Azithromycin, its is recommended not to have sexual contact  until 7 days after the start of treatment, and until symptoms have resolved.

At the start, Two Azithromycin 500mg tablets are taken orally for 1 dose, then one Azithromycin 500mg tablet daily for 2 days thereafter( 4 tablets in total). 

Do not take anything for indigestion 2 hours before or after you take this antibiotic as it will reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
