I recommend Tony Maleedy shampoo and conditioner to almost all of my hair patients right from the start.

I have known the Tony Maleedy Juniper Scalp Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner for some time and I have found them to have a calming and beneficial effect on various irritating scalp conditions.

They are excellent at cleansing the scalp in preparation for applying topical minoxidil 5% solution and foam (Regaine) for treatment of male pattern baldness. By using the Tony Maleedy Juniper Scalp Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner you will optimise the effects of the Regaine.

Also, I recommend his products to almost all of my patients right from the start when they come to my clinic for Hair Transplant Surgery. I feel it primes the scalp before the surgery and has a soothing and calming effect on the sensitive scalps after hair grafting procedures.”

What Causes Male Pattern Hair Loss?

Male pattern hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia, is primarily caused by genetics and the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone). If you have a family history of baldness, you're more likely to experience hair loss yourself. Hair follicles in genetically predisposed individuals are sensitive to DHT, causing them to shrink over time in a process called miniaturisation. This shrinkage makes hair thinner and shorter until affected follicles stop producing visible hair entirely. Age plays a role too, as hair loss typically becomes more noticeable after your thirties, though it can occur earlier.

Is Hair Loss Treatment Permanent?

Hair loss treatments like finasteride work by reducing DHT levels, but they require ongoing use to maintain results. Once you stop taking medication, DHT production returns to normal and hair loss typically resumes within several months. Think of treatment as a management strategy rather than a permanent cure. However, treatments can be taken long-term safely, allowing you to sustain hair retention and regrowth for as long as you continue using them. Some people combine treatments for better outcomes or use them indefinitely to preserve their hair.

How Effective Is Finasteride?

Finasteride is clinically proven effective for male pattern hair loss, with approximately 90% of users experiencing either hair loss stabilisation or regrowth. Around two-thirds of men see visible hair regrowth, whilst most others halt further hair loss. Results typically become noticeable after three to six months of consistent use, though some improvement may take up to a year. Individual responses vary based on genetics, age, and the extent of hair loss when treatment begins. Early intervention generally produces better outcomes than waiting until significant hair has been lost.

Does Finasteride Regrow Hair?

Yes, finasteride can regrow hair in many users. It works by blocking the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, reducing the hormone responsible for hair follicle miniaturisation. By lowering DHT levels, finasteride allows miniaturised hair follicles to recover and produce thicker, longer strands again. However, not all hair loss can be reversed. Hair follicles that have been dormant for many years may no longer respond to treatment, so earlier intervention typically produces better regrowth results. Finasteride is most effective at regrowing hair in the crown and mid-scalp areas.

Can I Use Finasteride and Minoxidil Together?

Combining finasteride and minoxidil is not only possible but often recommended for superior results. These medications work differently: finasteride reduces DHT production whilst minoxidil stimulates hair follicle growth directly. Together they target hair loss from multiple angles, offering better outcomes than either treatment alone. This combination is safe when used as directed and is backed by clinical evidence showing enhanced hair regrowth and loss prevention. Many dermatologists prescribe both medications simultaneously for moderate to advanced hair loss, particularly when single-therapy results prove insufficient or disappointing.

Can Hair Loss Treatment Help After A Hair Transplant?

Hair loss treatments can provide valuable support after a hair transplant. Whilst transplanted hairs are genetically resistant to DHT, your non-transplanted hair remains vulnerable to further loss. Using finasteride or minoxidil protects remaining native hair from continued thinning, helping maintain a natural overall appearance and preventing future gaps. This is particularly important if you're young or have extensive hair loss, as medications preserve the hair surrounding your transplanted grafts. Many surgeons recommend starting treatment before or immediately after transplantation to maximise long-term results and prevent noticeable density differences between transplanted and native hair.
