What is Nitrofurantoin MR?

Nitrofurantoin MR (modified-release), also known as Macrobid, is an antibiotic which kills the bacteria causing the urine infection. Modified release (also known as slow-release), releases the antibiotic into the blood stream over time. Therefore, you should swallow the capsules whole with a glass of water and not break them open or chew them.

Nitrofurantoin can turn your urine a dark yellow or brown colour but this is not something to be alarmed about as it's caused by the colour of the medicine.

How should I take it?

The capsules should be taken twice a day, twelve hours apart, for three days. The course must be completed to ensure that the infection doesn’t return or become resistant to the antibiotics. If you experience worsening symptoms after beginning treatment, such as acute pain or fever, you should go to your GP as your condition may need subsequent treatment. Nitrofurantoin usually cures most cases of cystitis, however if you experience symptoms after the course of antibiotics has been completed, we recommend that you visit your GP.

This treatment is only available for use in women; cystitis in men indicates that there may be a more serious issue that needs further medical attention.
