What is Trimethoprim?

Trimethoprim is an antibiotic which kills the bacteria causing the infection.

Some sexually transmitted diseases can also cause cystitis; if you have any other symptoms such as itching, pelvic pain or sores around the genitals; you should consult your doctor.

How should I take it?

The tablets should be taken twice a day, twelve hours apart, for three days. The course must be completed to ensure that the infection doesn’t return or become resistant to the antibiotics. If you experience worsening symptoms after beginning treatment, such as acute pain or fever, you should go to your GP as your condition may need subsequent treatment. Trimethoprim usually cures most cases of cystitis, however if you experience symptoms after the course of antibiotics has been completed, we recommend that you visit your GP.

This treatment is only available for use in women; cystitis in men indicates that there may be a more serious issue that needs further medical attention.

What are the side effects?

Side effects are rare but may include

  • Rash
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Headache
  • Thrush
