What is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation (PE) occurs when a man experiences orgasm and expels semen soon after sexual activity with minimal penile stimulation. This can occur at any time in a man’s life, regardless of sexual history and is usually associated with stress and anxiety; leading to relationship difficulties.

Medically, premature ejaculation is classed as ejaculating no more than 60 to 90 seconds after penetration; however the acceptable duration of intercourse is subjective and many couples choose to seek ways to prolong their sexual activity.

How does Priligy work?

Priligy tablets contain the active ingredient Dapoxetine, which is a type of medicine known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI’s). Dapoxetine works by increasing the activity of serotonin in the nervous system. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is involved in passing messages between nerve cells. It has various functions in the body and is involved in sending the nerve messages that result in ejaculation. Increasing the activity of serotonin in the nervous system helps to increase the time it takes to ejaculate and improve control over ejaculation. Studies have shown that men should experience a doubling or tripling of the times their erection lasts before ejaculation.  Its effects can last up to 3 hours and in some cases even longer.

How should I take Priligy?

One Priligy table is to be taken, with water, one to three hours before sex. No more than one tablet should be taken in a 24 hour period and it is not intended for everyday use.

Priligy can be taken with or without food, as this will not affect absorption. Priligy should not be taken with alcohol as it may increase the effects of alcohol; reduced reaction time, increased tiredness and vertigo.

What dose should I take?

The recommended starting dose of Priligy is 30mg but if your condition does not improve after taking this dosage, you can be prescribed the 60mg dose. Priligy is only licensed in men between the ages of 18 and 64 who have had PE for at least six months.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effects are:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Fainting

A comprehensive list of side effects is included in the patient information leaflet which is supplied with your medication.

Priligy should not be taken with alcohol, as it increases the alcohol’s effect on the body. If at any time whilst on the medication you experience dizziness or fainting, you should not drive or operate heavy machinery.

If you experience any side effects then you should lie down so that your head is lower than the rest of your body or sit down with your head between your knees. You should stay in this position until the symptoms pass.

Priligy may reduce your blood pressure, as can drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction, so we advise that these medications are not taken together.
